You will be thrilled to see how your portrait comes to life in a specially-positioned mirror that allows you to watch my canvas as I paint. This mini art-lesson will rivet your attention, and the sitting will fly by. I work quickly and complete a 16 x 20' portrait in two hours. Your friends and family are welcome to stop in and watch. And, yes, you can take rest breaks whenever you want. For group portraits, plan on one sitting per person, not necessarily on the same day.

When painting young children, I compensate for their movements by working quickly in the first few minutes to capture their likeness. I have painted children as young as five from life with excellent results. There is also the option of taking a picture and finishing the painting later.

LARGE PORTRAITS

Large portraits are highly-detailed and require additional sittings or the use of photographic reference. If you choose to have me work from photographs, I prefer to take them myself, posthumous portraits excepted. You will be involved in selecting which photographs I will work from.

It is my sincere hope that you will allow me to paint you directly from life. This allows you to be part of the painting process in a very personal way that will show in the final work. This is also how the best portraits, past and present, have been produced. You will value your portrait even more with the knowledge that you have personally invested in its creation.

The number of sittings required for different sizes are listed below. Each sitting will last two and one-half hours, scheduled at your convenience. Your time is important and I promise not to go beyond the number of sittings listed below.

PORTRAITS OUTSIDE OF UPSTATE NY

I will travel anywhere within the continental US to work on location. To make it easier for you to determine your final cost, I have simplified my travel charge to an additional flat rate of $600 per day, with a two-day minimum when airfare is required. This covers lodging, car-rental and additional shipping expenses for painting materials. The total number of days required will be determined by the size and style of your portrait. Smaller portraits can often be completed in two days, as can any taking of photographs for reference.
